Life Sentence for Murder in Leeds
A thief who killed an Amazon delivery driver while stealing his van has been sentenced to life in prison. Mark Ross, 32, was handed a minimum term of 30 years at Leeds Crown Court for the murder of Claudiu Carol-Kondor in August.
Ross attempted to steal the victim’s van while he was delivering a parcel in the Armley area of Leeds. Mr Carol-Kondor, 42, clung onto the passenger door, desperately trying to stop the theft.
Deliberate and Deadly Driving
In a bid to shake him off, Ross swerved violently and crashed into parked cars at speeds of nearly 60mph through residential streets. The final impact, a deliberate collision into another stationary vehicle, caused severe head and chest injuries, leading to Mr Carol-Kondor’s death at the scene.
The victim, who lived in Sheffield, was an Amazon delivery driver subcontracted by SP Transport Group. His employer described him as “more than just a colleague – he was a friend, a confidant, and a valued member of our team.”
A Calculated and Ruthless Crime
During the trial, the prosecution argued that Ross’s actions were not a reckless attempt to escape but a calculated effort to dislodge Mr Carol-Kondor. His erratic driving, including repeated collisions, showed intent to cause harm.
Ross, who lived near the scene of the crime, had targeted the van while the driver was on his route. CCTV and witness statements were crucial in proving his culpability.
Community in Shock
The violent nature of the crime has left the local community in shock. Mr Carol-Kondor’s tragic death highlights the risks delivery drivers face while carrying out their work.
Ross showed no remorse throughout the trial and was told by the judge that his actions demonstrated “callous disregard for human life.” His life sentence ensures he will serve at least 30 years before being eligible for parole.
Authorities hope this conviction serves as a warning about the consequences of violent crime and vehicle theft.
