St Patrick’s Day Parade Cancelled After Person Is Killed

A St Patrick’s Day parade in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, was cancelled after a tragic collision in the early hours of Monday morning claimed the life of a pedestrian.

Pedestrian Killed and Second Man Seriously Injured

A man in his 60s was killed in a crash involving a car and two pedestrians on Lower Main Street. A second man, also in his 60s, was airlifted to Galway University Hospital with serious injuries. The vehicle involved, believed to be a taxi, reportedly crashed into a house following the collision, causing minor damage.

Teen Arrested and Garda Ombudsman Informed

A male in his late teens was arrested at the scene and remains in custody. The Garda Ombudsman has been informed due to an earlier interaction between the suspect and Gardaí before the incident. Officers have appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage from anyone in the area between 2:30am and 3:30am, particularly between Dry Arch Roundabout and Oldtown Road.

Community Shocked as Parade Cancelled

The Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce confirmed the cancellation of the town’s St Patrick’s Day parade, citing public safety concerns. In a statement, they said: “It is with deep regret that we announce the cancellation of today’s St Patrick’s Day Parade following a serious traffic incident… We must prioritise the safety and well-being of our community.”

Investigation Ongoing

Gardaí continue to investigate the circumstances of the fatal crash. A post-mortem examination will be conducted, and the coroner has been notified. Officers have urged anyone with information to contact Letterkenny Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line.

Public Reaction

Local residents have expressed shock and sadness, with tributes pouring in for the man who lost his life. The event was set to be one of the town’s biggest celebrations of the year, with volunteers, businesses, and participants left devastated by the sudden cancellation.
