School On Lockdown With Kids Hiding Under Desks After ‘Knifeman’ Spotted

arents and pupils at St Mark’s C of E School in Shirley, Southampton experienced a terrifying ordeal when the school was placed under lockdown due to reports of an armed man in the vicinity. The incident occurred during school pick-up time around 3pm on March 24, 2025.

The Lockdown Situation

The school, located on Stafford Road, activated its lockdown procedures with an automated speaker system repeatedly broadcasting the word “lockdown.” The gates were shut, and children were kept inside for their safety.

One distressed parent described the unsettling situation, saying:

“The school is in lockdown at school pickup today at 3pm. They have shut the doors and are keeping the kids because there is a police report that there is someone with a knife locally in Shirley, but not in the school. There is a recording saying ‘lockdown’ over and over every second, and our kids will be hiding under the tables inside, scared.”

The parent added that while they understand the importance of safety, the ordeal left children feeling frightened and confused.

Police Response and Arrest

According to Hampshire Police, they received multiple reports of a man walking on Malmesbury Road, near the school, carrying two knives. Officers responded promptly and successfully apprehended a 44-year-old man.

The suspect is currently in police custody, and authorities have confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident.

Lockdown Lifted

The lockdown was eventually lifted once the situation was brought under control. The school has since resumed normal operations, and parents were allowed to safely collect their children.

Community Concerns

The incident has sparked concern among parents and the wider community about safety protocols and communication during emergencies. Although the school’s rapid response was praised, parents expressed the emotional distress their children experienced while hiding under tables, fearing for their safety.

One parent compared the situation to the frequent school lockdowns experienced in the United States, stating:

“I know there are lots of shootings in America, but I think this is news, as it is scarring kids for no reason.”

Police Statement

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said:

“We received reports of a man walking on Malmesbury Road, near St Mark’s C of E School, carrying two knives. Officers attended and a 44-year-old man was arrested and is currently in police custody. No injuries have been reported.”
