Russell Brand Charged With Rape and Sexual Assault

Comedian and actor Russell Brand has been charged with rape and several other serious sexual offences, the Metropolitan Police confirmed. The charges relate to offences allegedly committed between 1999 and 2005.

Four Women Involved in Allegations

The 50-year-old is facing five charges in total involving four different women. These include one count of rape, one count of oral rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault.

Incidents Span Multiple Locations

Police say Brand raped a woman in the Bournemouth area in 1999. He is also accused of indecently assaulting a second woman in Westminster in 2001. In 2004, he allegedly orally raped and sexually assaulted a third woman, also in Westminster. A fourth charge relates to a woman who was reportedly sexually assaulted between 2004 and 2005, again in the Westminster area.

Court Appearance Set for May

Brand, who currently lives in Oxfordshire, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday 2 May.

Ongoing Police Investigation

The charges follow a major police investigation launched in September 2023 after multiple women came forward with allegations. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, said: “The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers. The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.”

This is a developing story and updates are expected as the case progresses through the courts.
