Police are renewing their appeal for information as they continue to hunt for two men suspected of attempting to abduct an 11-year-old girl in South East London. The incident occurred on the High Street in West Wickham shortly before midday on Saturday, 24 June.
The young girl was approached by a man who tried to persuade her to leave with him. Noticing the girl’s distressed demeanour, a vigilant member of the public intervened and escorted her into a nearby shop, effectively removing her from the potentially dangerous situation.
The Metropolitan Police have released CCTV images of two men they wish to identify in connection with the incident. The images show the men inside what appears to be a corner shop. Both individuals are described as having dark hair and brown skin. One was wearing a long-sleeved grey top, while the other wore a white T-shirt.
Detective Inspector Sarah Johnson from the Met’s South Area Command Unit said, “We are keen to speak with anyone who recognises these men. Their information could be crucial in helping us understand the full circumstances of this incident and ensuring the safety of our community.”
Anyone who can name the men or has information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact the police by calling 101 or tweeting @MetCC, quoting reference CAD 3430/24Jun. For those who wish to remain anonymous, the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
This alarming event occurred just days after another attempted abduction in South London. On Thursday, 15 June, a man in a silver Ford Transit van reportedly tried to entice a child into his vehicle on Purneys Road in Greenwich during the morning school run. A quick-thinking parent intervened, preventing the potential abduction.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 9am. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that the child was safe and unhurt. “Enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances of the incident,” the spokesperson added.
These incidents have raised concerns among local residents about the safety of children in the area. Schools have been advised to remind pupils about ‘stranger danger’ and to encourage parents to accompany younger children to and from school.
Community support officers have increased patrols in the affected areas to provide reassurance and gather any further information. The police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
Local councillor Emily Thompson commented, “The safety of our children is of paramount importance. We urge everyone in the community to be watchful and to support the police in their investigations.”
The Metropolitan Police have emphasised the importance of community cooperation in such cases. “Public assistance is often crucial in solving crimes of this nature,” said Detective Inspector Johnson. “We rely on the eyes and ears of the community to help keep our streets safe.”
Anyone with information related to either incident is encouraged to come forward. Even the smallest detail could prove significant in ensuring these suspects are located and brought to justice.
