British Transport Police (BTP) are appealing for information after a man allegedly racially abused and spat at a woman on a London Underground train, in what is being treated as a hate crime.
The incident occurred shortly before 7am on Saturday, 9 September, on a Jubilee line service travelling between Kilburn and Finchley Road stations. The victim was subjected to racial slurs and was spat at by an unidentified man, causing significant distress.
BTP have released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incident. In a statement, they said: “Officers believe the man in the CCTV image may have information which could help with their investigation.”
Anyone who recognises the individual is urged to contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 144 of 09/09/23. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about hate crimes on London’s public transport network. Both BTP and Transport for London (TfL) are working to ensure passenger safety by increasing patrols and encouraging the public to report any suspicious or criminal behaviour.
Earlier this week, BTP issued an appeal after a man exposed himself to two women on the Elizabeth line at Bond Street station. A photograph of the suspect has been released to assist in the investigation.
In a separate incident in July, a man was reported to have performed a lewd act on a Northern line train, further emphasising the need for vigilance among commuters.
Passengers are reminded that they can report any incidents discreetly by texting BTP on 61016 or using the Railway Guardian app. TfL maintains a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime and sexual offences on its services.
