A man has been shot dead in Stanley, County Durham, in what police have described as a “truly shocking incident.”
Officers were called to reports of a disturbance on Elm Street at around 5.20pm on Thursday evening, where they discovered a man in his 50s suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Durham Constabulary has launched a murder investigation and confirmed the victim’s family has been informed. They are being supported by specially trained officers.
A significant police presence remains in the area, with a cordon expected to be in place for some time while forensics teams conduct investigations. Officers have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Senior Investigating Officer Neil Fuller said: “This is a truly shocking incident in which a man has been shot and has sadly died.
“We are carrying out several lines of inquiry and I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident, or has dashcam or CCTV footage, and has not yet spoken to officers, to get in touch.
“Residents may see an increased police presence in the area. I would like to thank them for their support while we carry out this investigation. Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this time.”
Police have not yet confirmed any arrests or named the victim, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
