Man pretended to be a Deliveroo driver but the contents of his bag landed him in jail

A drug courier posing as a Deliveroo driver has been jailed after being caught with over £2,700 worth of cannabis in a branded Deliveroo bag. The man, Abubaker Abdulrahman, 27, was arrested while making drug deliveries on an E-bike around Roath, Cardiff on January 5.

Police Intervention and Arrest

Police officers spotted Abdulrahman riding his E-bike near the junction of Monthermer Road and later stopping at a property on Pen y Wain Road. Officers approached and detained him, discovering 49 grip seal bags of cannabis, along with £90 in cash and a Samsung phone.

Cannabis Valuation and Evidence

The seized cannabis, weighing 281g, was estimated to be worth between £1,790 and £2,770. Items found included:

Six Cali bags of female flowering head

Three cannabis-infused vapes

Caramel fudge brownies containing THC

An examination of Abdulrahman’s phone revealed messages indicating he had completed 11 drug deliveries in Cardiff using the fake Deliveroo scheme.

Defence and Sentencing

Abdulrahman, who pleaded guilty to two counts of possession with intent to supply cannabis, claimed he was forced to deliver drugs under duress, alleging he was a victim of modern-day slavery. However, this defence was rejected by the court.

His lawyer, Martha Smith-Higgins, stated that Abdulrahman was an asylum seeker from Iraq who arrived in the UK in 2020. Due to his immigration status, he was unable to work or claim benefits, leaving him in financial difficulty.

Judge Paul Hobson sentenced Abdulrahman to 18 weeks in prison and banned him from driving for six months for using the E-bike without insurance.
