Man Killed After Being Hit By Police Car Responding To 999 Call

Collision in Acocks Green
A man has died after being struck by a police car responding to an emergency in Birmingham. The collision happened on Yardley Road, near the junction with Florence Road in Acocks Green, just before 7pm on Wednesday. The pedestrian, believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. West Midlands Police confirmed that the marked police vehicle was responding to a 999 call about a man seen carrying knives in the area.

Emergency response and aftermath
Two police officers inside the vehicle were unhurt. Additional officers responded to the original report about the armed man, but upon arrival found no signs of disorder. A cordon was quickly put in place around the scene, and the force has urged anyone with dashcam or other footage to come forward to assist with the investigation.

Independent investigation launched
West Midlands Police has contacted the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has now launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. A spokesperson for the IOPC said: “We have been advised that the collision took place at around 7pm on Yardley Road in Acocks Green when the police vehicle is reported to have been responding to an emergency call. The pedestrian, a man believed to be in his 40s, sustained fatal injuries and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.”

The IOPC confirmed that investigators were sent to the scene and have begun collecting evidence. The investigation is in its early stages, and authorities are working to determine the full sequence of events.

Family being supported
West Midlands Police stated that the family of the victim is being supported by specially trained officers. The IOPC added: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends and all of those affected by this tragic incident.”
