Man Arrested After Six-Hour Armed Police Standoff in Ellesmere Port

A man has been arrested following a six-and-a-half-hour standoff with armed police in Ellesmere Port.

Emergency Response and Road Closures

Police were called to Wellington Road at around 9.40am on Monday, March 17, 2025, following reports of concern for the welfare of a man inside a car.

The scene quickly escalated, prompting a large emergency service response, including:

• Around a dozen police cars

Multiple ambulances

A fire engine

A police negotiator

Cheshire West and Chester Council also announced that The Portal building was temporarily closed to the public due to the unfolding incident.

Negotiations and Arrest

For nearly seven hours, police negotiators engaged with the man inside the vehicle. At around 4pm, he finally stepped out of the car and was arrested.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing shouts of “Love you, Dad” and “Well done” as officers took him into custody.

Following his arrest, police and fire officers inspected the vehicle for any potential hazards.

Suspect in Custody

A Cheshire Police spokesperson confirmed:

*“At 9.42am this morning (March 17), police were called to Wellington Road in Ellesmere Port following reports of concern for the welfare of a man in a car.

Police negotiated with the man at the scene and brought the incident to a safe conclusion.

The man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to cause harm and possession of an offensive weapon. He has been taken into custody where he remains at this time.”*

Investigation Ongoing

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have yet to confirm any additional details regarding the nature of the arson attempt or the weapon involved.

Local residents have praised the efforts of the police negotiators for ensuring a peaceful resolution to what could have been a dangerous situation.
