Major Development In A1 Crash As Two Arrested And Update Given On Police Casualties

Seven Northumbria Police officers were taken to hospital after a high-speed collision involving a BMW and five police vehicles on the A1 near Gateshead.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:27am on Monday (7 April 2025) near the Derwent Haugh Road junction, following a police pursuit that began in the Whickham area after concerns were raised about the manner in which a dark grey BMW M Sport was being driven.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which then fled the scene and was later located in the nearby Swalwell area. A pursuit was authorised by specialist Roads Policing Unit officers, but within minutes the BMW and five police vehicles were involved in a serious crash.

Seven officers sustained injuries and were taken to hospital. Northumbria Police confirmed that four officers have since been discharged, two remain under observation, and one is receiving treatment for a leg injury. Miraculously, the two occupants of the BMW escaped uninjured.

Emergency services including Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and the North East Ambulance Service attended the scene.

A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. A woman, also in her 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting dangerous driving. Both remain in police custody.

Supt Michelle Caisley of Northumbria Police said:

“Firstly, we want to wish all the officers who have been involved in the collision a full recovery. We would also like to thank all those who attended the scene.

“An investigation is under way to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ask anyone with information that may assist us to come forward. We would also ask people to avoid speculation both online and in the community which could impact the investigation.”

A section of the A1 remains closed in both directions, with diversions in place from Derwent Haugh Road northbound and the A69 roundabout southbound. Motorists are advised to expect delays and follow alternative routes where possible.

Anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage from the area between 2:00am and 2:30am is urged to contact Northumbria Police via the live chat, direct message on social media, or online reporting forms. Dashcam footage can also be submitted via the dedicated portal on the Force’s website.
