A man has died in what police are treating as a shocking road rage attack in Oldham, after being deliberately struck by a van near a busy shopping park on Wednesday night.
Collision at Chadderton Roundabout turns fatal
Emergency services were called to the scene at the Chadderton Roundabout, off Broadway and close to Elk Mill Shopping Park, just after 7pm on March 26. Paramedics, police, and an air ambulance rushed to the area following reports of a serious collision.
A man, believed to be in his 50s, was found critically injured after being hit by a van. Despite the best efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has not yet been formally identified.
Suspect on the run after fleeing crash site
Greater Manchester Police have launched a manhunt for the van driver, who fled the scene immediately after the crash. A spokesperson confirmed officers are treating the case as a “serious assault.”
Witnesses reported the incident may have stemmed from a road rage dispute. One onlooker told the Manchester Evening News that the victim had exited his car to speak with another driver before being intentionally hit.
Major police response and cordon in place
The A627(M) slip road was closed as Serious Collision Unit officers attended the scene. Dignity screens were erected by fire crews as the investigation began. Roads around the roundabout remained shut late into the night as officers gathered evidence and reviewed CCTV.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: “Emergency services are responding to reports of a serious assault on Broadway in Chadderton. A van collided with a male pedestrian, who sadly died at the scene. Officers are making enquiries to locate the offender. A scene remains in place alongside several road closures in the area.”
