Human Remains Found Inside Recycling Plant in Hartlepool

An investigation is underway after human remains were discovered at a recycling centre in Hartlepool over the weekend.

Police were called to the Biffa plant on the Tofts Farm Industrial Estate just before midday on Sunday after workers reported finding bones. Officers later confirmed the remains were human.

Police Working to Identify the Remains

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team have taken over the case. Cleveland Police said they are working at pace but warned it could take significant time to identify the remains and understand how they ended up at the plant.

Senior Investigating Officer Chris Pringle said: “There are numerous procedures to follow to identify the remains and to establish the circumstances surrounding how they came to be at the recycling plant.

“I understand how concerning this will be for those living within our community and the wider public.

“I know there will be families who have missing loved ones and will be worried about the remains. I want to reassure you that if any relevant information comes to light, we will be in touch.”

Recycling Site Closed Off

The site remains cordoned off while forensics teams continue their work. The plant is closed to the public and under heavy police presence.

Locals have been urged to contact police with any concerns or relevant information. The incident number is 055293.

Not the First Discovery in Recent Weeks

The Hartlepool find comes just weeks after a full skeleton was discovered inside a house in Ancaster, Lincolnshire, sparking a major investigation there.

Earlier in March, another set of skeletal remains were found near a retail park in Stoke-on-Trent.

There’s currently no indication the incidents are linked. Police say they are treating each case individually.
