Horror as quiet Saturday litter pick turns into crime scene

Suspected Firearm Discovered Wrapped in Sock and Plastic Bag

A community litter-picking event in Salford took a dramatic turn when volunteers discovered what is believed to be a loaded firearm hidden inside a sock and plastic bag.

Shocking Discovery During Cleanup

Around 30 volunteers, led by community leader Brian Westley, were clearing up Frederick Street near St Stephen’s Gardens on Saturday, March 15, when a member of the group found the suspicious package.

Initially thought to be a heavy bottle, closer inspection revealed a gun-shaped object, prompting an immediate call to Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Large Police Response and Forensic Investigation

Officers arrived quickly, sealing off the Trinity Way area near Manchester city centre.

Brian’s son, Thomas Westley, who was present, described the moment they realised what they had found:

“We thought it was a heavy bottle but when we unwrapped it, we noticed a gun shape and called the police.”

According to police at the scene, the weapon was believed to be a revolver with six bullets inside.

Ongoing Police Enquiries

A GMP spokesperson confirmed that a suspected firearm has been recovered for examination.

“At around 12.20pm this afternoon (Saturday, March 15, 2025), we were called to reports of suspected weapons being found on Frederick Street in Salford. A scene remains in place whilst we make our enquiries. There is not thought to be a risk to the wider public at this time.”

Forensics teams remain at the scene as police investigate the origin and potential use of the weapon.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this incident to contact GMP via 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
