A woman sought by British authorities for her alleged involvement in a failed assassination attempt has been arrested in Armenia. The suspect, identified as Aimee Betro, was located in a residential area on the outskirts of Yerevan, the Armenian capital.
West Midlands Police had been searching for Betro in connection with an attempted murder in Birmingham in September 2019. The case, which concluded earlier this year, saw two men found guilty of conspiracy to murder.
Mohammed Aslam, 56, and his son Mohammed Nazir, 30, both residents of Elms Avenue in Derby, are awaiting sentencing next month. They allegedly hired Betro, an American national from Wisconsin, to shoot a businessman outside his Acocks Green home in Birmingham.
During the trial at Birmingham Crown Court, it was revealed that Betro had disguised herself in a hijab but failed to carry out the shooting when her firearm malfunctioned.
West Midlands Police acknowledged recent developments, stating that officers are in contact with relevant authorities. Betro’s whereabouts were reportedly uncovered by Daily Mail journalists who analysed her social media activity.
The Police of the Republic of Armenia issued a statement on Wednesday confirming that the 44-year-old suspect was apprehended on Tuesday in the Vanahovit district of Proshyan village, northwest of Yerevan. The statement noted that Betro is wanted in the UK on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and illegal possession of a firearm.
