Drunken Thug Banned From Every Pub in England and Wales

A man has been banned from entering any pub in the country after a violent and unprovoked attack left his victim needing extensive facial reconstruction surgery.

Paul Ormond, 38, launched the assault at the Turks Head pub in Retford, Nottinghamshire, after a day-long drinking session on July 6 last year. The court heard that Ormond, who had consumed ten pints of lager while watching football, cocked his fist and struck the victim with a powerful punch following an argument around 10.40pm.

The blow caused multiple fractures to the man’s face, including to his eye socket, nose and cheeks. He underwent several operations to insert plates and repair the damage, and has since had a second surgery to realign his jaw.

‘Several weeks of hell’ for victim

The victim said he couldn’t eat solid food for weeks, lost a stone in weight and thousands of pounds in earnings due to time off work. He described the aftermath of the attack as “several weeks of hell” and said he was warned by doctors that the surgery carried a risk of blindness or disfigurement.

“I know that I don’t look like I did before and I feel really down about it,” he told Nottingham Crown Court.

The court also heard there was a significant size difference between the two men. The last thing the victim remembered was seeing Ormond turn as if to walk away—before launching the sudden blow.

Pub ban and alcohol tag

Ormond, of Carolgate, Retford, admitted causing grievous bodily harm without intent. He was handed a suspended sentence and given a two-year ban from entering any pub in England or Wales. He must also wear an alcohol monitoring tag for 120 days, which checks his sweat every 30 minutes to confirm whether he has been drinking.

Judge Recorder Sprawson branded Ormond a “drunken thug” and ordered him to complete 120 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £7,500 in compensation to the victim.

Detective Andrew Sansom said: “This was a vicious attack which continues to have a significant impact on the victim to this day. We hope the sentencing makes a serious impact on the offender’s future choices.”
