Jade Devine Admits Causing Death by Careless Driving While Over the Limit
A drink-driver who killed two pedestrians before fleeing the scene has been jailed for eight years following a fatal collision in May 2022.
Jade Devine, 33, from Andersons Court, Flimby, admitted to two counts of causing death by careless driving while over the limit after striking Bethanie Clark, 31, and David Muir, 44, in the early hours of May 15, 2022.
Victims Found in the Road After Hit-and-Run
Cumbria Police were called after a member of the public spotted two people lying in the road. Despite the efforts of emergency services, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Devine’s Car Found Nearby as She Tried to Escape
A white Nissan Qashqai with extensive damage was found close to the crash site, and checks confirmed it was registered to Devine.
When officers arrived at her home, they saw her trying to escape through a garden gate. She ran away on seeing police but was chased down and arrested. A breathalyser test confirmed she was over the drink-drive limit.
Devine’s Admission: ‘I’ve Killed Two People’
It was later revealed that Devine had driven from Flimby to Workington to buy cocaine before heading home when the collision occurred.
Before her arrest, she reportedly went to a neighbour’s house and said:
“I’ve killed two people. That’s it, my life is over.”
In police interviews, she admitted panicking and fleeing the scene, saying she knew she was going to prison but wanted to see her children first.
Collision Investigation Finds Speed and Alcohol Were Major Factors
A forensic collision report found Devine was driving at excessive speed, which significantly reduced her reaction time.
The alcohol in her system also impaired her ability to control the vehicle and judge her surroundings, leading to the fatal crash.
Detective Sergeant Condemns Drink-Driving
Detective Sergeant Deborah Story, from Cumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, stated:
“This was a tragic incident which resulted in two people losing their lives. Devine’s actions prior to the collision – being over the limit for alcohol and speeding – were found to be significant factors in the outcome.”
“But she also made the decision to flee the scene rather than stay to assist those who she struck with her vehicle and await the arrival of the emergency services.”
“There is no excuse for drink-driving, and this case tragically illustrates the potential outcome if you do get behind the wheel whilst unfit.”
Sentencing and Driving Ban
Devine was sentenced to eight years in prison and has been banned from driving for nine years and four months.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drink-driving.
