A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly driving his car into a crowd of party-goers following a dispute at a nightclub in London’s busy theatre district.
The Metropolitan Police were alerted shortly before 1am today after the vehicle was seen mounting the pavement on Shaftesbury Avenue and driving on the wrong side of the road.
Four Injured, One in Critical Condition
Four pedestrians were rushed to hospital with injuries, and one remains in a life-threatening condition. Emergency services quickly responded to the chaotic scene near Caffe Concerto, where blood, clothing, and personal items were scattered across the pavement.
Incident Near West End Theatres
The crash occurred close to iconic theatres, including the Gielgud Theatre, home of Oliver, and the Sondheim Theatre, where Les Misérables is performed.
A police cordon remains in place this morning, stretching across the bustling Shaftesbury Avenue, as investigations continue.
Police Statement
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy commented:
“Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes. Detectives are progressing enquiries as part of this investigation.”
It is believed that the suspect had been involved in an altercation at a nightclub prior to the incident.
