Mum-Of-Two Glassed Her Best Friend in Packed Pub Then Kept Punching Her

A young mother was left with 41 stitches and permanent facial scars after being glassed in the face by her best friend during a drunken argument in a packed snooker club.

Attack over a dog row

Megan Smith, 27, was assaulted by former friend Ebony Jones, 26, after the pair argued over the sale of a dog involving Megan’s ex-husband. The confrontation took place at the Emporium Snooker Club in Bargoed, Caerphilly, in February 2023.

Jones, drunk at the time, thrust a half-pint glass into Megan’s face near her left eye, shattering it on impact. She then continued to punch her multiple times before being separated by other revellers. CCTV captured at least four strikes to the face.

Victim now known as ‘Megan Scar’

Megan, a support worker and mum-of-two, said the attack has changed her life forever. “I am now known as the girl who got glassed in the snooker club. People call me Megan Scar. I am no longer just Megan,” she said. The injuries led to the breakdown of her relationship and caused panic attacks and flashbacks.

“My step-mum had to help me shower and dress. I looked horrible. I couldn’t believe the level of scarring,” she added. One of her clients even told her she looked like she’d “been touched by the devil.”

Betrayed by her best friend

The pair had previously been “very close,” making the betrayal even more devastating. “Ebony has betrayed me in the worst possible way – she’s ruined my life,” Megan said. “I just can’t believe she assaulted me. She was my best friend.”

Court hears of ‘blurred memory’ and shattered glass

Prosecutor Byron Broadstock told Newport Crown Court that Megan asked Jones to leave her alone, but she refused. “The next thing she recalls is the defendant’s right arm coming towards her with a half-pint glass… that struck her in the face, connecting with her left eye.” Megan required treatment from a maxillofacial surgeon after receiving 36 stitches to her face and five to her nose.

Jailed for 30 months

Jones, a mother-of-two from Caerphilly, admitted wounding with intent on the day her trial was due to begin. Her lawyer said she suffers with mental health issues and is the sole carer for her children.

Judge Hywel James jailed her for 30 months and issued a 10-year restraining order. “Custody is required when, in a public place, an individual uses a glass to strike someone in the face—not once, but up to four times,” he said. “Such a sentence is in part a deterrent against such behaviour in public places.”
