Former Britain’s Got Talent contestant Oran McConville has tragically died at the age of 18 following a car accident in the early hours of Saturday morning in County Down, Northern Ireland.
Oran captured the hearts of viewers in 2017 when he performed with his school choir from St Patrick’s Primary School on the popular ITV talent show, eventually reaching the semi-finals. Their moving rendition of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” won praise from all four judges, with Simon Cowell calling it “a great audition”.
The teenager’s death marks the third tragedy to hit the McConville family. Just six weeks earlier, Oran’s father Paddy passed away. In 2009, Oran’s younger sister Rachael was killed aged 11 after being struck by a Volkswagen people carrier.
A Requiem Mass was held for Oran in Drumgath, where parish priest Fr Charles Byrne paid tribute to the “natural performer” and “bright light” in the community.
“Oran’s tragic death has brought devastating shock and grief to his family, friends and the wider community,” Fr Byrne said. “Six weeks ago, we were here for his father Paddy, and 16 years ago for young Rachael. Words are woefully inadequate to express the sorrow in our hearts.”
Fr Byrne described Oran as “the baby of the family” who was “full of mischief, but impossible to be cross with for long”. He added that Oran idolised his older brother Shea, with whom he shared “an unbreakable bond”.
Oran’s love of music continued after his BGT appearance. He learned to play the guitar and was passionate about attending concerts. Friends and co-workers at Milestone petrol station, where both Oran and his mother worked, remembered him for his “infectious positivity, kindness, and talent”.
Drumgath GAC, where Oran played Gaelic football, said in a tribute:
“Orán was more than a young man — he was a bright light in our community. Kind, gentle, full of humour and always up for a chat. He brought joy to everyone lucky enough to know him.”
The group added: “Whether on the pitch or in everyday life, Oran carried himself with warmth, respect, and quiet charm.”
Oran’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief from the local and wider community, who continue to mourn a teenager remembered for his talent, spirit and radiant smile.
