Man Shot Dead Through House Window in Broad Daylight on County Durham Street

A dad has been shot dead through a broken window on a quiet residential street in County Durham — and the chilling moment was caught on camera.

Footage shared online shows a group walking around erratically outside a row of terraced houses on Elm Street in Stanley just after 5pm on Saturday. One of them appears to smash the front window of a home that opens straight onto the street. Moments later, a man with his hood up pulls a handgun from his pocket and fires a single shot inside.

Screams can be heard immediately after the gun goes off, followed by the victim’s son shouting, “They shot my dad!” as the group flees the scene.

Victim declared dead at the scene

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the 60-year-old victim was pronounced dead outside his home. Neighbours said he was well-known in the area, describing him as a “lovely guy” who always smiled and said hello.

Police have since arrested a 37-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. They remain in custody as detectives continue their investigation.

Local community in shock

A large cordon remains in place as officers carry out forensic work and speak to neighbours. Police drones were flown overhead and investigators were seen examining a hole in the shattered window believed to be caused by the bullet.

A resident who lives a few doors down said: “It’s terrifying. I walk past that house every day with my daughter. I normally take her out around that time. It could’ve been anyone. I don’t feel safe here anymore.”

Another neighbour told local media: “I heard a loud bang and saw two young lads running off. It’s scary to think someone can just shoot through a house window like that.”

Police appeal for witnesses

Senior investigating officer Neil Fuller said the incident was “truly shocking” and urged anyone with dashcam footage, CCTV or information to come forward.

“Please don’t assume we already know what you’ve seen,” he added. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, who are being supported by specially trained officers.”

Locals have left flowers at the scene as the community comes to terms with the violent death on their doorstep.
