Police have confirmed they are reopening the investigation into the mysterious disappearance of Gary Shearer, a Celtic fan from Renfrew who went missing in Lanzarote over two years ago. Shearer vanished during a trip to the Spanish holiday hotspot on March 16, 2023, just before St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
Gary Shearer was reported missing after he failed to catch his return flight home. He was last seen outside Bar 67 in Puerto del Carmen, and CCTV footage captured him lying unconscious in a doorway next door around 12.30am on March 17. Despite extensive searches by Spanish authorities and his desperate family, his whereabouts remained unknown.
Shearer’s family made numerous trips to Lanzarote to aid in the search and to put up missing posters, but their hope began to fade when Spanish police announced in June 2024 that they were closing the missing person’s case after exhausting all leads.
However, recent developments have revived hope. Police have confirmed they will be reopening the investigation into Gary’s case and are providing the family with additional information. Family members have traveled back to Lanzarote and have been putting up fresh missing posters in the hope of finding answers.
According to a statement shared on the “Find Gary Shearer” Facebook page, the police have offered clarification regarding the timings of the CCTV footage. It was confirmed that Gary was last picked up on CCTV at 12:49am on March 17. The family promised to share a clearer timeline of events soon.
Shearer’s family continues to appeal to the public for help. Posters detailing his description have been distributed across Lanzarote, with the hope that someone might have valuable information about his disappearance.
Gary Shearer is described as:
•Height: 5ft 3in
•Build: Slim
•Hair: Black, greying
•Eyes: Brown
•Distinctive Markings: A tattoo reading “Gary” on his neck
•Last seen wearing: A green and white Celtic FC shirt
The family’s determination to find Gary remains strong, as they continue to push for answers nearly two years after his disappearance. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward to help shed light on the mystery surrounding his case.
