Man found dead in Bury home
A 70-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of an 84-year-old man was discovered in his home in Prestwich, Bury. Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers were called to the property on Butterstile Lane on Thursday, where the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Injuries deemed suspicious
Police said the man had suffered injuries which were deemed to be suspicious following a post-mortem examination. Detectives from GMP’s Major Incident Team launched a murder investigation and arrested a woman who was known to the victim. She was taken into custody on Tuesday evening around 7pm and remains there for questioning.
Investigation underway
Detective Inspector Alex Wilkinson from the GMP Major Incident Team said: “We understand the concern this news will raise within Bury that we have launched a murder investigation, but I would like to reassure the local community our initial inquiries suggest it is a contained incident with no wider threat to the public.”
He added: “As part of our investigation we must follow strict procedure and ensure we obtain as much evidence as possible to understand more about what happened, which has sadly led to an elderly man losing his life.”
Community reassured
Police have confirmed there will be an increased presence in the area as they continue their investigation. Officers have urged anyone with information to come forward, though they believe there is no wider risk to the community.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released, and police have said the man’s family are being supported by specially trained officers. A post-mortem examination and further forensic analysis are expected to take place as inquiries continue.
