Police confirm threat ‘not genuine’ but school shuts as precaution
A man is at the centre of a police investigation after sending chilling emails to multiple schools, threatening to use a gun to “cause harm”. The emails, which reached nine schools in Sheffield and one nursery in east London, triggered an emergency response — with one school shutting its doors immediately.
London nursery forced to close over ‘credible’ threat
St Mary’s School in Walthamstow was forced to close its nursery section this morning after receiving an email referring to “acts of violence”. While the main school is shut due to the Easter holidays, the nursery had been due to open.
An email sent to parents warned of a threat “committing acts of violence to those on our premises” and confirmed the school was working closely with police, who initially classed the threat as credible.
Threat linked to Sheffield schools
The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that the threat is believed to be connected to similar emails received by nine schools in Sheffield. According to South Yorkshire Police, the email came from a man claiming he was armed and willing to cause harm.
Police said they were alerted to the emails at 6.38am on Monday and have since launched an investigation, but say there is no evidence to suggest the threat is genuine.
Increased patrols, no signs of immediate danger
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “Officers worked at pace and have found no evidence to suggest the threat is genuine. Neighbourhood patrols will be in place today at the affected schools to provide reassurance.”
In Walthamstow, the Met confirmed that while no pupils were in the main school due to holidays, the nursery had chosen to relocate “as a precautionary measure”. Officers remain at the site and investigations are ongoing.
MP confirms threat is isolated and under investigation
Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy took to social media to reassure parents, confirming that the school was the only one in London affected and that police were treating the matter seriously.
She wrote: “This threat has also been received by other schools outside London. This is the only school in Walthamstow to receive this and the police are on site to actively investigate. There is nothing to suggest any faith connection to the incident.”
No arrests yet — investigation continues
Police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the threats, but both the Met and South Yorkshire Police are working together to identify the source.
The school has not yet issued an official comment, but parents have been urged to await further updates while the situation is reviewed.
Reassurance, but concern remains
While police believe there is no credible risk to public safety, the incident has left many shaken. One parent told local reporters: “It’s terrifying to get an email like that about your child’s school. Even if it’s a hoax, the fear is real.”
For now, investigations continue — with officers still working to track down the individual behind the disturbing threats.
